Joshua 23.1-16
Joshua was called by God to lead the people of Israel into the Land of Promise and secure their inheritance. He had known the bondage of Egypt and the intensity of slavery. He had known Moses and served alongside him as he led the people of Israel in the 40-year wilderness wanderings. He heard the Law of the Lord as was given on Mount Sinai, saw water come from a rock, saw manna and quail come from heaven, and saw judgment on the people because of sin. Following Moses’ death, he was commissioned by the LORD to lead the people and was told to be strong and very courageous, being careful to do all according to all the law that Moses my servant commanded you. Do not turn from it to the right hand or the left, that you may have good success wherever you go. (Joshua 1.7). In leading, Joshua saw the Jordan River split as the people of Israel walked across dry land and saw the walls of Jericho fall as they marched around the city seven days. When Achan sinned, he saw defeat and the Lord’s displeasure, resulting in judgment. Following the people’s repentance, Joshua repeatedly saw cities conquered and the people inherit the land. When he knew his life was short, Joshua gathered the people together and spoke his last words. In this he said, And now I am about to go the way of all the earth, and you know in your hearts and souls, all of you, that not one word has failed of all the good things that the LORD your God promised concerning you. All have come to pass for you; not one of them has failed (23.14). Joshua knew it was the Lord who gave them victory and was always faithful to do all He had promised.
As we reflect on our lives, may we also know the Lord’s faithfulness, for He has saved us, forgiven us, adopted us, and ever kept His Word as all His promises have, are, and will be fulfilled. Even when we do not understand and are not fully aware of how He is working, we can have absolute confidence He is and will ever be faithful. As we reflect on our lives, may we also know the Lord’s faithfulness as He called us to Himself, loved us, saved us, forgave us, and adopted us as His own. Throughout our lives He has provided for us, helped us, led us, and protected us, often in ways we do not know and in difficult times we do not understand. Our Lord is ever trustworthy, as He has kept His Word and all His promises have, are, and will be fulfilled. Even when we do not realize it and do not comprehend how He is working, we can have absolute confidence He is and will ever be faithful.
Knowing our Lord is faithful – we have much to be thankful for –
