The Delights of the Heart

Psalm 37.1-29

In what or who do we delight; what are the strong desires of our heart; what compels us when we awake in the morning? Are these delights of the flesh and how we can satisfy our selfish longings; are they of the world’s offerings and our attention of acquiring more stuff and things; are they of the entertainment world, and what we can do to have more fun? All these are quickly fleeting; they come and go as fast as the wind, bringing no true satisfaction or fulfillment. They delight us one day, and the next may leave us empty; one day they are compelling and the next can be repulsive. May our hearts be turned to delight in the unchanging Lord who is able to fill us with the fullness of joy; to consider the God of all creation, the Almighty, Eternal, and Sovereign Lord over all; to be compelled by Him who has loved us with an everlasting love, sacrificially having given His Son to be our Savior; to enjoy and rest in the unfading truth of His Word. In contrasting the believer with the wicked, the psalmist wrote: Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him, and he will act (Psalm 37.4-5).

As we meditate on the character of God, on His loving kindness, His holiness, and His unfailing grace may we desire and be compelled to have our eyes filled with delighting in Him; to be awed and humbled in His presence; to be fully satisfied with His gracious salvation and the revelation of His Word. As we delight in our Lord our desires will be nothing other than what He desires for us; our cravings to stray into failing temptations of wickedness will dissipate and we will be abhorred at the very thought of sinful pleasures. May we commit all our ways to Him, seeking to do His good pleasure, following the commands of His Word, and anticipating the fulfillment of His promises. May we trust Him and not the ill thoughts of our minds, His certainty and not our confusion. May our true delight be in our Lord.

Delighting in the Lord – we have much to be thankful for –
