Hiding in a cave, pursued by enemies and in danger of his life, David prayed. Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me, for in you my soul takes refuge; in the shadow of your wings I will take refuge, till the storms of destruction pass by (Psalm 57.1). Knowing there was nothing he could do to save himself, knowing he was facing imminent danger, knowing the power of his foe, David relied fully upon the mercy of God, on the lovingkindness of God to rescue and help him. Similarly, in days of our deep darkness and feeling trapped in a cave of despair, may we call out to the Lord for His lovingkindness to deliver us; may we be fully dependent upon Him, trusting His loving provision. In Him alone are we able to find refuge in the shelter of God’s powerful protection and in the loving arms of our Savior. Though the enemy lashes out, though the darkness gets darker, though the barrage of attacks seem to never cease, we can know complete security and safety in our Redeemer’s care and the truth of His Word.
During those times of intense spiritual opposition we can seek to fight the battles on our own, we can contrive various methods of defense, and we can pour every ounce of our strength into plans, only to fall short of victory and of having any peace in the midst of the storm. However, we can choose to place our full confidence in the Lord and rest in His untiring power, we can cling to Him and rest in the shadow of His wings and there find refuge. In knowing our Heavenly Father, our Saving Lord, the Indwelling Spirit – in our eternal God we can know His peace, we can trust in His sovereign care, we can follow His loving guidance. David trusted, till the storms of destruction passed by. They will pass; our Lord will be victorious; His name will be glorified. Our responsibility: to cling to Him and trust Him; to believe Him and accept His powerful protection; to wait for His certain deliverance in His timing, as He shows Himself to be our victor.
