We each have problems; there are struggles we have to endure. We face difficulties and trials that can seem overwhelming; we fight temptations and do battle to resist sin. We suffer at varying levels. Some of our suffering comes from living in a body that is not meant to last, and we live with pain, incur disease, and struggle with our health. Other suffering comes from the heart, as our problems affect our emotions; relationships can be difficult or torn, and sadness can be powerful. Other suffering comes from those around us who may mock or taunt us, shun us, or relegate us to obscurity because of our faith. Recognizing that we do and will face suffering, Paul exhorted us to stand firm in faith, as we anticipate the faithfulness of our Lord. For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us (Romans 8.18).
Our lives are temporary on this earth, and the present will soon pass when we are translated into eternity. In considering our salvation, our hope, and our position in Christ, the suffering of this present day pales in comparison. Paul aptly and clearly reminded us of what our Lord has given to us. We are no longer condemned, but set free through the redemptive work of Christ and the power of the Spirit; we have peace with the eternal God; we have been raised with Christ and given new life; we are no longer bound by sin, for in Christ we are dead to sin; we have been indwelt by the Spirit of God and are kept by His Spirit; we have been adopted into the heavenly family by the Father; we have become joint-heirs with Jesus Christ; we will someday see Him and be glorified together with Him. Keeping all this in perspective, today’s interruptions to our plans and desires will not overwhelm us; the struggles we face and the trials we go through will not overcome us. Rather, we will be able to endure them with hope and peace, having our eyes set on our Lord and His gracious promises.
With a heart focused on Christ – we have much to be thankful for –
