Freedom should never be taken for granted or be unappreciated. Having the unique privilege of living in freedom, we understand this did not come easily or without great cost. Over the course of this nation’s history many have served in our Armed Forces; many have given their lives on harsh battlefields; many families have endured separation and faced unimaginable struggles; many have worked hard in factories to provide necessary supplies; our nation as a whole has endured great difficulties. Living in these United Sates we have much to be thankful for, and many to thank for their service and sacrifice.
Not to minimize our national freedom, we recognize the incomparable greatness of eternal freedom known only in Christ. If the Son sets you free, you shall be free indeed (John 8.36). The bondage of sin is a bondage of the heart and life. This bondage captures us with an unrelenting desire for the walls of imprisonment to grow only thicker and make release seem impossible. The wicked pursuer of our heart’s delights in our captivity will do all possible to keep us from knowing the taste of true freedom. Yet, freedom is possible and known through the grace and mercy of God alone, through the love and sacrifice of Jesus Christ. As national freedom did not come without great price, so eternal freedom is made possible only through the great sacrifice of Jesus Christ, of God becoming flesh to endure the scourge of man and the merciless pain of the Cross. Though His physical pain is beyond understanding, the far greater and incomprehensible pain was Christ bearing the burden of our sin and being separated from the Father as He sacrificed Himself for our atonement and freedom. Christ alone has enabled us to live free, now and eternally. As we enjoy our national freedom, may we also enjoy and rejoice in Christ our Savior, praising Him for our true freedom.
If the Son sets you free, you shall be free indeed.
Living in true freedom – we have much to be thankful for –
