Habakkuk 3.1-19
The prophet questioned God; he did not understand why God did not put an end to the wickedness which rose through the nation following the death of a righteous king; why they would not be stopped; and then, why He would use a far more wicked nation to bring judgment upon Judah. It did not make sense to him. Yet, God reminded Habakkuk that He was in control, that He would judge all wickedness in His time, and that the responsibility of those who were righteous was to “live by their faith” (Habakkuk 2.4). Though the situations of life can seem contrary to what we think should happen, though God doesn’t intervene in ways we would expect, and though our struggles seem to go unheeded, we are to trust the Lord. In being reminded of the sovereign design of God, of the merciful kindness of the Lord, of the assurance He will always fulfill all His promises, the prophet’s conclusion is clear. “Though the fig tree should not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines, the produce of the olive fail and the fields yield no food, the flock be cut off from the fold and there be no herd in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the LORD; I will take joy in the God of my salvation. God, the Lord, is my strength; He makes my feet like the deer’s; He makes me tread on my high places (3.17-19).
We can have this absolute confidence in our Lord that if all we have should vanish from before our eyes, if all our earthly security should suddenly be gone, if our expectations are not fulfilled, and if life does not happen the way we expect, we can still trust in our God. He is our Savior; He is our Lord; He is our Strength; He is our Hope; He is our Security; and He will ever be faithful. The Lord will always fulfill all His promises to us; He will always provide exactly what we need to live in harmony with Him and to do His will; He will always enable us to overcome all obstacles and temptations. He will never forget us; He will never neglect us. We can move forward, living confidently by faith.
Confident in our Lord – we have much to be thankful for –
