Stopping to Think about the Familiar

Proverbs 3.1-20

In the familiarity of Scripture, we can sometimes overlook the point; having read it, memorized it, and thought about it in the past, its significance can be lost. One of these passages is Proverbs 3.5-6: Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths. It is important to carefully stop and think. We are called to trust the LORD and not ourselves; to trust Jehovah – He who is dependent on none other, who is existent in Himself alone, and who is sovereign over all creation. We can trust Him fully, with all our heart. The temptation is to trust Him periodically; to trust only when our circumstances are in sync with our expectations, or when events are not disruptive to our plans. Trusting with all our heart dispels doubt, and inconsistent and conditional trust. It is trusting totally and completely, regardless of our situation, our joys, or our troubles. In trusting our Lord, we will not withdraw to our own determinations or conclusions, or exalt our wisdom above the Word of God.

We are also exhorted to acknowledge Him in our every choice. Acknowledgement implies submission; it is willingly choosing His authority over our own. In submission, we trust He will direct us, lead us, and make clear to us our every path. In acknowledging our Lord, we accept His way is superior to our choices; we acknowledge He sovereignly knows the purpose and the design of all things and have total confidence in His working. In full submission to our Lord we trust He will direct our paths. We live in confidence, knowing He knows us perfectly, and will perfectly provide and care for us. In trust and acknowledgement, we are able to rest in Christ, to live in confident assurance He will be faithful to us and His Word; we can anticipate He will fulfill all His promises; we can rest in the perfection of His working in our lives, knowing all He does is good, and will be good for us.

Trusting and acknowledging our Lord – we have much to be thankful for –
Terry
