The Israelites were encouraged to consider the needs of others, and not become consumed with what they were doing, what they wanted, and with their own lives. They were to consider those who were less fortunate and not have hardened hearts toward others. Take care lest there be an unworthy thought in your heart (Deuteronomy 15.9). Unworthy thoughts could consist of such things as: certain people are not as important as me; what is happening in their lives doesn’t impact me; they are only getting what they deserve; they wouldn’t have to be poor if they just tried harder; it is their own fault; let them find a way to take care of themselves. Moses reminded them, there will never cease to be poor in the land. Therefore I command you, “You shall open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy and to the poor, in your land” (15.11). There would always be the poor and needy, and they were called to share what they had; they were not to squander for themselves, but to share their blessings.
The poor are among us. There are those who are financially poor for varying reasons. Sometimes it is brought about because of bad decisions; at other times it is the course of life. Some are poor because of inability and need for dependence upon others. This may be because of varying types of physical or mental limitations, injuries, or diseases. We need to remember what Moses told the Israelites. One, we are to be careful that we do not have unworthy thoughts in our hearts towards other people. Regardless of their situation or the reason for it, the reality exists that they are those who have been created by God for purpose, and they are needy. Two, there will always be the poor. However, that does not mean we should do nothing; that we should turn our heads and focus only on ourselves. May we consider how we might help, how we might encourage and bless others with the blessings we have received from the Lord.
Blessed to bless others – we have much to be thankful for –
