As the people of Israel prepared to cross the Jordan River and begin conquering the Promised Land, the Lord gave instructions on how to divide the land. Two tribes, Reuben and Gad, requested to settle on the east side of the river; they saw the land was good for their livestock and homes. The Lord gave them permission with one prerequisite: they first needed to go with the rest of Israel to conquer the land until each tribe was given their inheritance. Once this was done, they could return to their wives, children, homes, and livestock in Gilead. However, if they did not follow through as the were commanded, and as they committed themselves to do, God would not overlook their offense. But if you do not do so, behold, you have sinned against the LORD, and be sure your sin will find you out (Deuteronomy 32.23). Their choices and sinful actions would not be hidden.
This is critical for every believer to remember. We may think our sin is in private, that no one will ever know of it, that it is well hidden in our hearts and minds. We may consider that our actions will impact no one else and that it is not a “big deal.” We can try to rationalize it away and ignore potential consequences. However, we must remember that God sees and knows, and He will not overlook sin in our lives; our sin will find us out.” In this there are two critical truths for us to firmly hold. One, we do not have to sin. By the power of the indwelling Holy Spirit we are enabled to resist all sin, to flee from every temptation, and cling to Christ. The child of God will have the intense desire to not sin. Two, when we have sinned, when in weakness we have failed our Lord, we do have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous (1 John 2.1). When we come before the Lord in repentance and faith, He will forgive, He will cleanse us of all sin, He will restore us to fellowship with Himself. May we be quick to seek His forgiveness and to move forward in His righteousness.
Enabled to be free of sin – we much to be thankful for –
