Victory in Spiritual Battles

2 Chronicles 20.1-17

Faced with his enemy, King Jehoshaphat of Judah was filled with fear; he knew his inability to gain victory against overwhelming opposition. Recognizing his weakness and inability, he sought the Lord. Having assembled the people together, Jehoshaphat prayed, O, LORD, God of our fathers, are you not God in heaven? You rule over all the kingdoms of the nations. In your hand are power and might, so that none is able to withstand you… O our God, will you not execute judgment on them? For we are powerless against this great horde that is coming against us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you (2 Chronicles 20.6, 12). In prayer, he acknowledged the supremacy of God, the rule of God, and the full authority of God over all; he recognized that none could successfully oppose the Sovereign Lord; he trusted the Lord’s strength, ability, and absolute control over all things. Fully submitting to the Lord and His will, Jehoshaphat and the people believed God as the prophet proclaimed their absolute victory. Believing, they responded in worship and trusted God.

The key to their victory did not come from the repetition of mere words of belief, but rather from a full heart of faith. Our foe may be fierce, our enemy of great strength, temptations extremely intense; and our bodies and minds may be weary from previous battles. However, may our resolve be strong, our intentions clear, and our commitment to our Lord and Savior unwavering. Jesus Christ is able to deliver us now from the bondage and intention of the enemy and will keep us throughout eternity. He demonstrated His power and might in the past and has already secured our victory through the Cross and resurrection. Uncertain of particular situations, may we unflinchingly set our eyes upon our Lord, knowing He knows and is able to deliver us from all evil. May we respond in faith and humility before, during, and following all battles, as we worship our Lord.

Trusting our Lord for victory – we have much to be thankful for –
Terry
