Training for Godliness

1 Timothy 4.1-10

We train for various things or events in order to do well. A runner will diligently train to compete in the race, having a rigorous routine for muscle strengthening and speed. He doesn’t train to lose, but to win, and gain victory over others or his own best time. Being determined, he won’t quit training because he’s tired, has struggles, or faces pain. He knows that through endurance and difficulty he will become stronger, faster, and more capable. Effective training is work; it can be hard, but the results are rewarding and satisfying. Paul, in encouraging Timothy to hold firm to the truths of Scripture, wrote, Train yourself for godliness; for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come (1 Timothy 4.7-8).

Though we are made new at the time of our being born again, we cannot expect godliness to instantaneously be a characteristic of our lives. As believers we should ever be growing in godliness, ever becoming more like Jesus Christ, and ever living in greater harmony with the Scripture. This training takes work. It requires getting rid of sinful practices from our lives; it means removing our selfishness and pride and learning humility. This godliness only comes as we submit to the control of the Holy Spirit and have a heart change to desire Christ’s righteousness to reign in our lives. Training for godliness means putting on what enables us to live well, to demonstrate the fruit of the Spirit, to live to please God; it takes the discipline of rigorous Bible study, prayer, and meditating on God’s Truth; it takes determined practice of doing what is right, of making righteous choices; it means not quitting when the road is difficult, filled with unforeseen obstacles, or we are tired; it means we persistently keep moving forward. Training for godliness will produce great results in our lives today as well as for eternity, for God’s glory and our joy.

Training for godliness – we have much to be thankful for –
Terry
