1 Peter 2.1-12
An infant longs for milk for nourishment and satisfaction; the child will cry, scream, fuss for milk when they are hungry; they will not give up until they are fed; they will continue their desire in unignorable ways longing for their hunger to be satisfied. Peter used this illustration to press home the desire we should have for God’s Word. Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation – if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good (1 Peter 2.2-3). Beginning with the last phrase, if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good, the first step is knowing the Lord, having sought Him in salvation, having called to Him in repentance of sin seeking His forgiveness, and having understood His goodness in His redemptive love. For us who know Christ as Savior, we are to long for the pure spiritual milk, to long for the Word of God.
This longing is not a passive word, or a word meant only for an occasional desire. Rather, this longing stems from a desire to grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ, to grow in our love for Him. This longing is likened to a child longing for milk for their satisfaction. Therefore, there should be an intense craving, a groaning desire that overwhelms all other desires, a powerful drive and an extreme energy for God’s Word. May we pray that this desire for the Lord’s Word would only increase in our lives, that we would not rest with small offerings, but long for large portions to fill and satisfy our desire to know and love Christ more. The greater our understanding of the Word of God, the greater will be our love for our Savior; the greater our love for our Savior, the greater will be our love for God’s Word. The circular experience of growing in love for God’s Word and for Jesus will not stop for the one intentionally longing for the Lord. May we be ever thankful the Lord has opened our eyes to His redemptive love, given us a longing for His Word, knowing He first loved us and gave us the gift of faith, enabling us to love Him and grow in His love.
Longing for and satisfied in God’s Word – we have much to be thankful for –
