Colossians 3.1-17

Though changed in Christ, we often live as if we were not, as our focus, desires, and ambitions have not changed. Physically we are no different, for we still wear flesh and breathe earthly air. Yet, we are totally changed, having been born again, indwelt by the Holy Spirit, and made God’s children. It is for this reason Paul exhorts us to new thinking. “If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth” (Colossians 3.1-2). Having died to sin, raised with Christ, and given new life, our thoughts and actions should correspond to this truth.

“New birth” change is instantaneous, but the activity of our change takes commitment and determination. Paul uses two words, “seek” and “set,” to challenge our actions. Seeking is not a onetime activity, a quickly accomplished task, a soon done work. Seeking is looking diligently, not quitting, and being intent on finding and seeing. We are called to seek the things above, that which has eternal value, which is harmony with our Lord. We are to seek the things of Christ; to seek what will bring glory to His Name, will honor Him at His Throne, and will recognize His position at the Father’s right hand. “Setting” has the idea of stability, foundation, and being unmovable. We are to set our minds on the things of heaven; not swayed by the passing desires of the world, by the fleeting enticements of the flesh, or by the deteriorating accomplishments of this life. May we set our minds on His redemptive grace, on His abounding love, on the riches of His mercy, and on His ever faithfulness; might we set our minds on His perfect provisions, on the fulfillment of His promises, and on His continual care. Persistently may we seek His face and set our minds on Him to never be moved, to never be distracted, and to ever be filled with joy and thankfulness as we have been raised with Christ our Lord.

Hidden with Christ in God – we have much to be thankful for –
