“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1.1). This is foundational to the Christian faith; this is the physical beginning of all we know. The worlds were not formed by some mystical happening; they were not made by a gathering of gods; they were not generated by an unexplainable explosive act. They were designed by God, made by God, created by God, formed by God, and are sustained by God, Father, Son, and Spirit. The Lord God has always existed; He has no beginning; He has no starting point. He was not made by anything or anyone. He is fully existent in Himself. There was nothing before Him; there is none which has co-existed with Him in eternity past; there is none other self-existent being. God alone made the worlds which are, and there is nothing made which He has not made; He made everything, and He made everything perfectly good.
By His power He created; God spoke and all which exists was brought into being. By His sovereign authority He created and began the execution of His perfect design to reveal Himself to the created. In His love He created, that we might be able to know Him, to know His holy perfection and His inexpressible grace. In the reflection of His majesty He created, and all He did was good; there was no flaw, no mistake, no regret, no undoing and redoing; His handiwork was perfect. With absolute knowledge He created; knowing all which would come to pass, knowing all history before it began to unfold, He created; knowing the awfulness of the fall and the wonder of salvation, He created that we could know and enjoy Hm. With an understanding of His redemptive mercy He created, knowing He would provide a perfect sacrifice, His Son, to reconcile fallen man and bring us into a renewed relationship with Himself. In a magnificent display of His glory He created, that we might know Him, behold Him, praise Him, and in complete awe humbly bow before Him.
Knowing the Creator – we have much to be thankful for –
