Proverbs 20.1-13

We have been created in an amazing manner by an incredible God. Every part of us is specifically created; every function perfectly designed; every component perfectly fitting with all others. “The hearing ear and the seeing eye, the LORD has made them both” (Proverbs 20.12). Ears and eyes, created by God and given to us for purpose. Having ears and eyes, we are responsible for how we use them and for how we respond to what we see and what we hear. In some situations, we have no control over what we see or hear. The eyes may see what we would not prefer to see; they may see what is sinful; they may see what is tempting. The images coming through the eyes may deceitfully tempt us to draw us into sinful choices; they may see what is intriguing and lure us to see more, even when we know we should resist. We cannot always be responsible for what we see, but we are accountable for how we respond to what we see. The same holds true for what we hear. The voices and sounds coming to our ears may be vulgar, repulsive, and ungodly. They can lure our sinful thoughts to hear more, enticing us to sinful responses.

Though we cannot always control what we hear and see, we can choose to turn our heads and ears, and to not focus on what is sinful. When we can control what we hear and see, may we choose to fill our minds with what we know is true and righteous, to choose what is pleasing to our Lord. May we give ourselves to  Scripture, to music, to books, to conversations that will strengthen our faith and honor our Lord. He gave us eyes and ears for purpose, and may we use them to bring glory to His Name. For some, the ears do not work and the eyes cannot see, and the mind is filled with memories or imagination. Even in this, may our thoughts be directed in a manner which pleases the Lord. For what we have and for their working, we have much reason to give thanks to our gracious Creator who has gifted us for purpose.

Every part created for purpose – we have much to be thankful for –
