Genesis 18.1-21

The Lord made a covenant with Abraham that he would be the father of a great nation; the Lord promised Abraham that he would have a son. However, by the time he was 86 and his wife 76 they had no children; it appeared God was not keeping his promise. Abraham and Sarah decided to solve the matter their way. Sarah gave her handmaid, Hagar, to her husband to bear him a child. Hagar became pregnant; Sarah became bitter; Hagar was an outcast; and Abraham was no doubt confused. Fourteen years later the angel of the Lord came to Abraham and announced he would have a son with his wife, Sarah. They wondered, questioned, and laughed at how this would be possible now in their old age. God didn’t laugh; He had a plan; He was going to make good on His promise. In reminding them of His sovereign ability, the Lord said to Abraham, Is anything too hard for the LORD? At the appointed time I will return to you, about this time next year, and Sarah shall have a son (Genesis 18.14). No, nothing is too hard for He who is creator of all and sovereign over all. Sarah became pregnant; Isaac, the son of promise, was born.

There are times we may wonder how God will fulfill His promises to us; we may question His plan, and even His willingness; we may doubt how God’s Word will be fulfilled in the presence of our difficult or troubling circumstances. In these times we need to remember the Lord’s words to Abraham: Is anything too hard for the LORD? Our responsibility is not to understand the intricacies and fullness of God’s workings. We are not told, and we don’t need to know how, the details will work together to accomplish God’s design. We are told to believe, to trust the Lord of all glory, to have unwavering faith in what He says. We must be ever careful not to limit God and His ability or the worthiness of His design. He is creator and sovereign. He is God; we can trust His love and power will always reach beyond our need.

Trusting our Great God – we have much to be thankful for –
