David, prior to his death, charged his son Solomon regarding his character, his ambition, and the work set before him. Solomon’s task would not be easy; following his father’s reign would be challenging. Yet, David set him up for success, provided for needed materials and labor to build the temple in Jerusalem, and then exhorted him to faithfulness. Then David said to Solomon his son, “Be strong and courageous and do it. Do not be afraid and do not be dismayed, for the LORD God, even my God, is with you. He will not leave you or forsake you… (1 Chronicles 28.20). This charge is almost identical to the one the Lord gave to Joshua, following the death of Moses, before they began to cross the Jordan River to take the land of Promise. The Lord wanted both Joshua and Solomon to remember basic truths as they were about to set out on a new mission in life, as they were preparing to do the work the Lord had prepared for them to do.
This charge is certainly applicable for us today. Regardless of our days, the tasks at hand, or the challenges set before us, may we hear these words and have them settled in our hearts. May we be strong in the Lord, never wavering in faith. May we be courageous in life, regardless of opposition or temptation; may we stand firm on the truth of the Word of God and the hope of our salvation. May we be committed to not shrink in fear or discouragement, knowing our Lord will provide exactly what we need each day of our lives, ever equipping us to live each day in victory, pleasing Him. May we rest in the truth that our Lord will never leave us or forsake us; may we remember that we are never alone, never left to ourselves. He will always be with us to lead us, help us, and enable us along the path of life. Our responsibility is to be faithful, to have a “whole heart and a willing mind (28.9), believing what we know to be true, and anticipating our Lord using us for His glory in all we do.
Resting in His presence – we have much to be thankful for –
