On what do we fix our eyes this morning? What is the goal of our living? On what are our greatest desires of our hearts? For many, the answer is simple: a better job, more time off, retirement, more money, financial security, a new home, and the list goes on, perhaps a bit differently in each one’s life. But what do we truly want to gain; what do we consider our true treasures?
The true treasures of the righteous should never be seen in people, in family, in the stuff and things of our collections. Rather, our true treasures are found in Christ alone. “In the house of the righteous is much treasure…” (Proverbs 15.6). Being made righteous through the redemptive work of Jesus Christ our treasure house is full. On these treasures of new life and eternal life might our eyes be undistracted, bringing about a heart filled with thankfulness, awe, humility, and praise. To begin, our treasure house is filled with the Word of God which reveals the love of God, the sovereign grace of God who chose us before the foundations of the world were ever formed. It is filled with the mercy of God by which we are forgiven of all our sin. It is filled with the grace of God as He gives us the exact opposite of what we so rightly deserve as condemned sinners. It is filled with the atoning work of the Son of God who gave Himself on the Cross of Calvary, taking our place, providing the perfect sacrifice, and now declaring us righteous before the Father’s Throne. It is filled with the indwelling work of the Holy Spirit of God. It is filled with the promises of God woven throughout the pages of Scripture which assure us of His protection, of His shepherding care, of His provision for all our needs now and throughout eternity, of His watchful eye, of His enabling us for every path we walk. It is filled with hope of eternity, of Christ’s coming again, and our being in His holy presence where we will fully realize the fullness of His Treasures given to us.
Having all treasures in Christ – we have much to be thankful for –
