Hebrews 4.1-13

The Word of God is unlike any other book. “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart” (Hebrews 4.12). There is none that can compare to it; none that has been written throughout history that has had the equivalent impact of it; none that has withstood the course of time with such integrity; none that has been more widely read. The Word of God is unique because it is God’s Word; it was inspired by God, directed by God, and has been protected by God through the years. It is what the Lord specifically and carefully, intentionally and supernaturally gave to us; it is what He wanted us to know about Himself, about all creation, about ourselves, and about His gracious redemptive plan established from before the worlds were formed. Through the work of the Spirit of God and in faith, this book of the Lord is able to change lives and give purpose and hope; it can remove despair and frustration, confusion and meaninglessness; it can lead us to freedom from sin and guilt, teaching the hope and joy which comes through forgiveness.

The Word of God is a living Word, in that it never grows old, is never outdated, and will never be replaced. It is living in that it is used by God to actively work within us, changing us and conforming us to the image of His Son, Jesus Christ. This Word is like a “two-edged sword” which is able to pierce our inner being, revealing to us sin and convicting us to repent; it is able to show us our hearts and minds, transforming us to be in full harmony with Himself. This Word brings healing to our souls, righteousness to our hearts, and holiness to our minds. In this Word we are able to see our Lord and His Majesty, ourselves and our unworthiness, and the sacrificial and redemptive love of Jesus Christ as we are adopted into the eternal family of God.

Being given God’s Word – we have much to be thankful for –
