Do we love the Word of God; are knowing the Scriptures a priority of our lives; do we eagerly approach the Bible in expectation to know God’s truth? Many things vie for our attentions; many activities call for our participation; many desires compete for our affections. What is our response? Do we eagerly follow whatever looks good or fun; do we seek after what promises much but is only able to offer little; do we run after more, wanting to amass greater abundance for our own pleasures? The Psalmist, having reflected on God’s Word, concluded that nothing compared to the wealth of Scriptures; nothing could compete with the value of knowing God’s Word. More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb (Psalm 19.10). The Word of God alone satisfies the deepest longings of the soul; it alone provides for the fullness of our desires; in the Scriptures alone we are told of God’s redemptive love and are offered salvation, hope, and contentment.
Moreover, by them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward (19.11). In God’s Word we are warned of sin, of the enemy, of all the forces of evil; in them we are alerted to the sinfulness of our own flesh and desires, and the wickedness of our selfishness. In contrast, God’s Word gives the fullness of hope, the blessing of peace, the truth of life. In diligent allegiance to the Word of God we will be blessed; we will come to recognize and be fully satisfied with the goodness of God, the provisions of God, and the protection of God. The reward is great, for in the Scriptures we learn of God’s grace, mercy, and care both for now and eternity; we learn of God’s redemptive love and are able to know the full forgiveness of all sin; we learn of the One and Only Almighty God who has promised to us all we need. May we delight in God’s Word, have great joy in His saving grace, and be encouraged in following our Savior.
Being given God’s Word – we have much to be thankful for –
