Prone to forget, to wander, to be distracted, Moses reminded the people of the Lord’s gracious working. He had cared for them during the days of bondage, brought them out of the land of slavery, provided for and led them during the wandering years in the wilderness, and was about to give them the land of promise. Once having entered the land, the Lord knew they would become comfortable in their surroundings and enjoy the fruit of the land of which they had not labored; He knew they would become enticed by the gods of the people whom they had defeated; He knew they would be intrigued to follow the lusts of their flesh. Therefore, Moses was directed to challenge them to remember, to hold tightly to what they had known and learned during these previous 40 years. “Then take care lest you forget the LORD, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. It is the LORD your God you shall fear. Him you shall serve and by his name you shall swear” (Deuteronomy 6.12-13). The Israelites were called upon to be totally and passionately loyal to the Lord. Not only loyal in their words, but fiercely loyal in their commitment to full obedience to His Word.
We are not unlike the Israelites. We, too, can become pleasantly comfortable in our lives, consumed with family and activities, with work and school, with life commitments and obligations. We, too, can forget that we belong to the Lord; that He redeemed us through the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ for purpose; that He has made us His own and adopted us into His family; that He took us out of the bondage of sin and lifted us from the curse of sin; that He has led us, provided for us, kept us, and given us everything we need. May we never forget and become lackadaisical in our commitment to the Lord and the relationship we have been given with Him; may we never forget we are His all because of His loving grace and holy desire for us.
Remembering our salvation – we have much to be thankful for –
