There are many things which can draw people away from the Lord as we are faced with the constant bombardment of temptations deceitfully seeking to lead us away from truth. The plight of wickedness, power, lust, immorality, materialism, and vain philosophies can grip at one’s heart and life. We can be deceived by the evil intentions of the wicked one and his vile attempts to turn the Truth of God and His Word into blasphemous lies. Knowing the enemy’s intention, the believer must stand firm on truth; we must hold to the great doctrines of the Scriptures; we must not allow ourselves to waver. The Psalmist speaks of his relationship with the Lord and God’s powerful working in his life to deliver him. But, this psalm also speaks of Jesus Christ, who suffered death on our behalf as the pure and complete sacrifice for our sins; He was buried; He rose again, and a “new song” was placed in His mouth of completed redemption, of victory over Satan, and of the purchase of the saints.
In response, believers in Jesus Christ can rest in Him and have hope in Him alone. “Blessed is the man who makes the LORD his trust, who does not turn to the proud, to those who go astray after a lie” (40.4)! Our blessings come in knowing the Lord is sovereign over all creation and will accomplish His sovereign plan of redemption; “many will see and fear and put their trust in the LORD” (40.3). Our blessings come in knowing the Lord has taken us out of “the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog” of sin, of enslavement to the enemy, of hopelessness and certain judgment. Our blessings come in knowing our Lord has set our “feet upon a rock, making our steps secure” (40.2). Our blessings come in knowing we have an unshakable foundation in life in the person of Jesus Christ, our Rock, and He will keep us secure now and for all eternity. Regardless of situations or temptations we face, our hope and confidence rests in Christ alone.
